Arlington, VA — States, territories, and private and public organizations have until Aug. 31 to apply for one of the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grants.
The agency will provide up to $250,000 in grant funding for development of educational and training programs “focused on effective emergency response and recovery training in various types of mining conditions.”
MSHA is interested in programs that focus on training miners on new agency standards, high-risk activities or hazards identified by MSHA. The agency says it will give “special attention” to programs targeted to miners at newly opened and smaller mines, as well as training and compliance assistance programs for new operators.
MSHA is expected to award the grants on or before Sept. 30.
The Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grants Program is named in honor of a combined 25 miners who died in 2001 in Brookwood, AL, and in 2006 at the Sago Mine in Buckhannon, WV. The grants were established under the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006.
