Fact sheets offer tips for protecting workers in gas stations and convenience stores

Washington — New fact sheets from NIOSH are intended to help workers at gas stations and convenience stores – and their employers – reduce the risk of violence on the job.

Workers in these settings face a greater risk of violence than others in the retail sector and the overall workforce, the agency says.

Actions employees can take:

  • Know the location of all exits, alarms, emergency numbers and call buttons.
  • Always keep exit routes clear.
  • Complete all employer-provided safety training.
  • Make sure doors have working locks.
  • Keep store windows clear of posters and signs so police can see inside.
  • Make sure security cameras are recording and that you can observe the areas being recorded.
  • Have a safe space you can go to if you feel in danger and to call 911.

Recommendations for employers:

  • Ask police to remove any reported or observed trespassers.
  • Keep product shelves low so intruders can’t use them to hide behind.
  • Install bulletproof glass between customers and the workers who handle money.
  • Keep only a small amount of cash at the store or station, and use a drop safe in which workers can deposit money often.

If a threat is made, don’t respond with another threat or yell at the violent person, the agency advises. NIOSH also recommends not fighting back or risking your life if the person says they merely want money. Report all violence or potentially violent incidents to a manager and the police.
