Fact sheets offer tips for protecting workers in gas stations and convenience stores

Washington — New fact sheets from NIOSH are intended to help workers at gas stations and convenience stores – and their employers – reduce the risk of violence on the job.

Workers in these settings face a greater risk of violence than others in the retail sector and the overall workforce, the agency says.

If a threat is made, don’t respond with another threat or yell at the violent person, the agency advises. NIOSH also recommends not fighting back or risking your life if the person says they merely want money. Report all violence or potentially violent incidents to a manager and the police.
