Creating workplaces where we all watch out for each other

You may have created workplace policies and procedures, but have you ever asked yourself how effective they are?

Looking up and down on a consistent basis or for long periods of time can overload your muscles, and may lead to musculoskeletal disorders. In fact, looking to one side and twisting your neck on a regular basis without pauses triples your risk of neck pain compared with looking straight ahead.

So, set up your workstation to allow you to look straight. Here’s how:

  • Place your equipment in a way that keeps your gaze straight ahead.
  • Arrange your desk so common items are centered to your body.
  • Position your work at or below eye level to match your vision and the task.

Other tips to prevent MSDs:

  • Pause and stretch often to give your neck a break.
  • Enlarge text size and graphics on your screen if you’re having trouble seeing them. If you’re still having trouble, consider getting glasses or corrective lenses.
  • Adjust the distance of your work or screen to about an arm’s length from your eyes, then fine-tune the distance and height for your vision and task.
