‘We’re championing a culture of prevention and protection,’ Chemical Safety Board says

Washington — Chemical Safety Board investigation reportssafety recommendations and videos “provide a clear-eyed view of the scale and cost of preventable chemical incidents,” board member Sylvia Johnson said during a recent public meeting.

The board met April 24 to discuss agency achievements over the first quarter of the year. A frequent target for elimination under the first Trump administration, CSB has continued to create distance from the long-standing investigative backlog it eliminated in fiscal year 2024.

“We’re not just investigating incidents,” Johnson said. “We’re championing a culture of prevention and protection to protect workers, communities and the environment.”

She added: “Each of our investigations carries consequences for either a worker, a company, a family, a community and/or the public. The work of the CSB demands that we do more to prevent future tragedies.”

Furthering an announced agency initiative to increase transparency, since January the board has released additional information on 51 serious chemical releases, offering data that goes beyond what’s required under CSB’s accidental release reporting rule.

CSB’s YouTube channel also recently was recognized with a Silver Play Button from the online video-sharing platform for surpassing 100,000 subscribers.

Board member Catherine J.K. Sandoval believes CSB products enhance safety culture through the sharing of information.

“That then could help other companies to prevent these incidents from the design phase through the operational phase, through thinking about their supply chain and all phases,” Sandoval said during the meeting.
