Greenbelt, MD — Law enforcement officers across North America will be checking commercial truck and bus drivers’ compliance with federal hours-of-service rules during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 38th annual International Roadcheck.
Scheduled for May 13-15, the enforcement and outreach event also will include inspections of braking systems, lights, tires and other vehicle equipment.
Last year’s Roadcheck produced nearly 49,000 inspections, with 4.8% of the vehicles and 23% of the drivers placed out of service. At 32.1%, HOS was the top reason for driver out-of-service violations.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s HOS regulations are “in place to safeguard transportation safety by limiting driving hours and mandating adequate rest breaks to ensure commercial motor vehicle drivers have the opportunity to get the rest they need, thereby preventing crashes and incidents caused by fatigue,” CVSA says in a press release.
FMCSA participates in the International Roadcheck program, along with the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators; Transport Canada; and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communication and Transportation.
