Washington — Mark your calendar: The 13th annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction is set for May 4-8.

Developed by OSHA, NIOSH, and CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training, the initiative is aimed at raising awareness of hazards to help prevent fall-related injuries and fatalities. (The National Safety Council supports the stand-down.)

Falls from height remain a leading cause of death in construction. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the construction industry accounted for 47.8% of all fatal slips, trips and falls in 2023.

Suggestions for stand-down activities include:

  • Create or improve your written fall protection and rescue plan
  • Conduct a toolbox talk
  • Inspect equipment and revisit job hazard analyses
  • Discuss fall experiences and their consequences
  • Schedule a demonstration of fall protection equipment
