Remote work and hybrid setups, such as two days at home and three in the office, have become the norm for people who work at a desk.
For employers, this means taking steps to ensure employees can complete their work at home in a safe and healthy manner.
“Job stress can happen when the job requirements do not match the capabilities or resources of the worker,” NIOSH says. “This work-related stress may also lead to illness.”
To create a healthy home office environment, the agency says to:
- Set up an ergonomic workstation with proper equipment.
- Ensure the workspace has adequate lighting and is situated in a quiet area.
- Choose a location where the worker can easily control temperature, humidity and airflow to stay comfortable.
- Make sure the job tasks being assigned and completed are compatible with the home environment.
- Keep any harmful chemicals out of the workspace.
