Promote healthy eating at work

“Diet plays a critical role in the health of employees,” says the Institute for Health and Productivity Studies, part of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The institute adds that workers with a poor diet run the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and different cancers.

Here’s how employers can support healthy eating habits.

Provide access to healthier foods and beverages. Stock vending machines with options such as baked chips, unsalted trail mix and protein bars. Water should also be available, in addition to unsweetened beverages. Dispensers placed throughout the workplace can encourage workers to drink more water.

Label nutrition information. “Labels that highlight healthy choices can help make the healthy choice the easy choice for employees,” the institute suggests. Consider adding visual cues, such as traffic lights or a heart symbol, next to healthy food items.

Educate employees about nutrition. Circulating brochures, playing nutrition-related videos on workplace screens, putting up posters in shared workspaces and sending wellness-related emails can give workers the information they need to make healthy choices.
