Washington — The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration recently published a set of FAQs on training requirements.

The FAQs were developed based on letters of interpretation applicable to hazardous materials regulations.

PHMSA provides answers to 19 questions, including:

  • Is a hazmat trainer required to have a certification or minimum level of training?
  • Do hazardous materials regulations allow a hazmat employee to self-train?
  • Who’s responsible for the required hazmat training of a subcontractor’s employees?

This set of FAQs is the third in a series published by the agency. The first, on the applicability of the hazardous materials regulations, was released in December 2022. That was followed by another set on incident reporting, published in August.

PHMSA says it will begin considering its next set of FAQs based on public input received. The deadline to comment is April 12.
