Washington — Employers can now register for OSHA’s new Safety Champions Program.

Intended to help employers develop and implement effective safety and health programs, the program’s main goal is to prevent workplace deaths, injuries and illnesses.

It features seven core elements from OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs:

  1. Management leadership
  2. Worker participation
  3. Hazard identification and assessment
  4. Hazard prevention and control
  5. Education and training
  6. Program evaluation and improvement
  7. Communication and coordination for host employers, contractors and staffing agencies

“The Safety Champions Program has three steps (introductory, intermediate and advanced),” the agency says. “The steps are self-guided, and participants may work at their own pace.”

Program participants may request a Special Government Employee to assess their safety and health program, as well as their progression within the program.
