Washington — The National Safety Council recently announced it will extend its free traffic safety training, education and resources to employers in North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and West Virginia.

NSC has received four federal pass-through grants totaling almost $1.3 million. The funding will be used by its Our Driving Concern program to help employers in the four states prevent roadway crashes, injuries and deaths. The training and education will focus on leading crash factors such as speeding, distraction and lack of seat belt use.

“Prevention requires action,” NSC CEO Lorraine M. Martin said. “These grants empower employers by giving them free tools, training and support to provide to their employees – and, in turn, to their communities. They also allow us to deepen our partnerships with state agencies and expand the reach of Our Driving Concern, helping more organizations protect what matters most – their people.”

Transportation incidents accounted for nearly 37% of workplace fatalities (a total of 1,942) in 2023, according to the most recent data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“These grants help us work directly with employers to make traffic safety part of everyday workplace culture,” said Cody Stewart, senior manager of the Our Driving Concern program. “When employees model safe driving habits, the impact extends beyond the workplace to families and communities across each state we serve.”
