Washington — The Environmental Protection Agency recently updated its Spanish Translation Guide for Pesticide Labeling to include information on restricted-use pesticides, first aid, personal protective equipment, engineering controls and storage.
The Pesticide Registration Improvement Act of 2022 requires pesticide manufacturers to translate into Spanish safety and health information on product labels. The act also directs EPA to notify registrants within 10 days of updating the guide.
“The Spanish translations ensure that workers have access to important information to protect themselves and others from pesticide exposure, protect the environment, and get appropriate help if exposed to a pesticide product,” EPA says.
The updates went into effect Dec. 26. The original guide was published in 2019 “in response to feedback from stakeholders who believe that having bilingual pesticide labeling is critical to the well-being of pesticide handlers, applicators and farmworkers, many of whom do not speak English as a first language.”
Under the act, labels for restricted-use pesticide products and agricultural-use products with the highest toxicity must be translated by Dec. 29, 2025. All other labels must be translated by Dec. 29, 2030.
