Silver Spring, MD — Employers are encouraged to pause work to talk with workers about struck-by hazard recognition and prevention during the seventh annual National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents, set for April 20-24.

Struck-by hazards are present on nearly every jobsite and include falling and flying objects, vehicles and heavy equipment, and swing hazards from cranes. “These incidents are the No. 1 cause of nonfatal injuries in construction and the leading cause of death among heavy and civil construction workers,” says CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training, “but they can be avoided by careful planning, training and the use of controls.”

The theme for this year’s stand-down is “Safe Actions Save Lives.” Workplaces can participate in various theme days during the week. On its website, CPWR has more than 50 different resources – many available in Spanish – for employers taking part in the stand-down. They include the “What is the Struck-by Stand-Down” flyer, along with toolbox talks, fact sheets, videos, safety alerts and presentations.
