In 1996, the National Safety Council designated June as National Safety Month and began distributing free safety resources to highlight the leading causes of preventable injury and death. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the safety observance.
Over the years, NSC has laid the groundwork for so many of the safety-related actions we take today. That includes leading the Airbag and Seat Belt Safety Campaign in partnership with more than 25 other organizations. In 2009, the council was the first national organization to call for a nationwide ban on cellphone use behind the wheel, defining a landmark stance on distraction. See a 30-year timeline.
The weekly themes for this year’s event:
- June 1-6: Moving Safety Forward
- June 7-13: Staying Safe on the Roads
- June 14-20: Promoting Holistic Worker Health
- June 21-30: Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls
The May episode of Safety+Health’s On the Safe Side podcast explores the themes. Plus, NSC’s Julie Kite-Laidlaw visits to talk roadway safety.
How will your workplace celebrate NSM this year? Will you take the SafeAtWork Pledge? Perhaps you’ll hang up NSC’s safety poster? Or maybe you’ll “Go Green for Safety” and then share your photos on social media using #NSM? Go here for more.
