Stand Down to Save Lives

Stand Down to Save Lives campaign

Purpose of the Event

The MSHA’s Stand Down to Save Lives campaign aims to help prevent mining fatalities, serious injuries, and illnesses. The initiative does this by encouraging the entire mining community to set aside time for hazard recognition and safety practices. While July 10 serves as the campaign’s central focus for activity, the ultimate goal is to foster a more robust safety and health culture every single day.

This annual event provides a key opportunity for mine operators, miners, trainers, and MSHA staff to:

  • Pause work to openly discuss hazards and how to deal with them.
  • Conduct workplace and equipment inspections to find and fix problems.
  • Deliver meaningful safety training and refreshers on common mining risks.

The 2025 campaign theme is: “Stand Down to Save Lives: Detect the Danger”

This year’s message underscores the importance of recognizing warning signs before accidents happen. MSHA encourages mining operations of all types and sizes to participate in this national effort to prevent fatalities and make sure every miner gets home safe.
