Safely navigating through construction work zones can be challenging for truck drivers.
These zones often have narrow lanes and require traffic pattern shifts, which isn’t easy when operating a large commercial motor vehicle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says large trucks “are overrepresented in fatal work zone crashes.”
To help prevent these incidents, FMCSA recommends truck drivers:
Research the route before leaving. This allows for alternate routes that keep trucks out of work zones and detours.
Follow the signs. Construction work zones often feature signage directing drivers to reduce their speed or merge. Pay attention to posted signs.
Slow down. Approach work zones slowly and stay alert for road workers.
Put space between vehicles. FMCSA says that “rear-end crashes are extremely common in work zones.” Keep your distance from the vehicle in front of your truck when traveling through work zones.
