Toronto — Employers who want to identify and reduce slip, trip and fall hazards have a new tool at hand: an inspection checklist from the Public Services Health and Safety Association.
The checklist features descriptions of numerous hazards related to administrative actions, equipment, floor surfaces, work processes/design, exterior/roof areas and client care.
Employers and supervisors can check “yes” or “no” next to the provided description after determining whether the hazard is present and, if necessary, assign a priority level for corrective action:
- High – implement or correct immediately
- Medium – implement or correct within a specified time frame
- Low – implement or correct if practical
Additional spaces are provided for a recommended corrective action, as well as worker comments and concerns.
According to Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries data released Dec. 19 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, slip, trip and fall events in the United States led to 885 on-the-job deaths in 2023.
