San Diego — A lack of safe places for truck drivers to stop and rest is again in the top five on the American Transportation Research Institute’s annual list of top trucking industry concerns.

ATRI, the research arm of the American Trucking Associations, surveyed more than 4,200 trucking industry stakeholders, including drivers, motor carriers, suppliers, driver trainers and law enforcement.

Although safe parking fell two spots to No. 4 overall, it still ranked second among drivers.

In sixth place: the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance Safety Accountability safety measurement system – up one spot from last year.

“Last year, FMCSA announced a number of changes that it intended to make to CSA in response to industry concerns,” ATRI says. “Those changes include reorganizing several BASICS (which will now be called compliance categories), simplifying the severity weights and placing a greater focus on more recent violations. However, FMCSA has not – as of this writing – announced when those changes will be implemented and as a result, CSA continues to rank high among survey respondents.”

The list includes separate new issues involving drivers. English language proficiency came in seventh and driver training standards ranked ninth.

ATRI says that a “significant” volume of 2024 write-in responses prompted the inclusion of English language proficiency on its list of available issues. That feedback from drivers also has influenced training concerns.

“The majority believe that new entrants are not being trained adequately to prepare them to safely operate large commercial vehicles,” ATRI says.

The state of the economy topped the list for the third consecutive year.
