Acting Secretary Su, Assistant Secretary for Mine Safety and Health Williamson to join union members, business leaders to discuss good jobs

Officials to visit Cleveland-Cliffs Tilden iron ore mine that is vital to U.S. steel supply chain

WASHINGTON – Acting Secretary Julie Su and Assistant Secretary for Mine Health and Safety Chris Williamson will travel to Michigan, Oct. 25 to visit one of the nation’s leading suppliers of automotive steel to meet union and business leaders, mine workers and safety experts for a discussion on how federal investments and policies promote Made In America products and good jobs in U.S. manufacturers’ steel supply chains.

Acting Secretary Su and Assistant Secretary Williamson will meet with workers represented by the United Steelworkers Local 4950 and Local 4974, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers-Transportation Division and with senior management of Cleveland-Cliffs, one of North America’s largest producers of flat-rolled carbon, stainless, electrical, plate and long steel products. The officials will also tour the company’s Tilden Mine in Ishpeming to observe extraction and concentrating of iron ore, a critical component in manufacturing steel.

Roundtable participants will discuss the importance of good jobs for miners and the essential contributions of Michigan miners to the U.S. automobile manufacturing economy, as well as infrastructure and manufacturing. They will also focus on how Biden-Harris administration policies make American workers, products and businesses a priority when taxpayer dollars are used for infrastructure and construction projects.

The Cleveland-based company employs about 28,000 people across its operations in the U.S. and Canada.
